Members of the Charlottesville Camera Club are divided into "B" (beginner) and "A" (advanced) classes. Each month, members are encouraged to compete against others within their own class by submitting prints for judging. The prints should fit the following three categories: 1) Assigned (see topic, below), 2) Open (photographer's choice of subject), and Creative. Manipulations acceptable for prints in the Assigned and Open categories are listed in the Rules of Competition (Download PDF). The "Creative" category allows members artistic freedom through the use of any available camera or digital manipulation including image capture using a scanner.
We also offer the “Member Gallery,” where members present prints for critique, discussion, and suggestions for future direction—all outside the competitive context. Both the competition judge and members are called on to contribute to the critique.
| Month | Assigned Topic | Description | Judge |
| January | SHOES | Shoes that tell a story; artistic shoes, macros or abstracts of shoes. Strive for an uncommon, original, and creative image of an everyday object. | Roy Sewall |
| February | FLASH ON! | Take a photo in which you use your flash. Can be fill flash, flash arranged to light portraits, still life, etc., inside or outside. There will be a workshop, hopefully before the competition, to talk about and demonstrate different ways to use flash for lighting. | Andrew Shurtleff |
| March | TREES IN B&W | Tree(s) should be the main subject, and these entries must be in black and white or sepia. | Corey Hilz |
| April | PORTRAITS | This can be of one or more people. They should be posed and know that they are having their pictures taken. Can be inside or outside, but must be "arranged", not a snapshot. Lighting will be very important to this subject. | Bill Allard |
| May | POWER | Demonstrate the strength of man, nature, machinery, or anything else your imagination can supply. | Sherwin Kaplan |
| June | COMPANIONSHIP | Can be people, animals. Photo should show that subjects are friends, "buddies,"important to each other. Work to tell a story, convey a feeling. | Judge:
Frank Feigert Presenter: Hank Roden |
| July | THE GARDEN | There is a lot of room for creativity in a garden, but also the burden of coming up with something different from the thousands of garden photos that we may have all seen before. Experiment with something new and shed a fresh light on an old subject. | |
| August | AMERICANA | Mom, baseball, and apple pie--but there's a lot more than that, so how do you capture our culture, history, geography, idiosyncrasies in a photograph? Perhaps an icon, person, place, or artifact that helps define who we are as a people. | |
| September | WET | Use your imagination; this subject speaks for itself. | |
| October | BENT OR TWISTED | Do you think Caduceus, or someone with an evil mind? Perhaps it's a turn in the road, a coil or corkscrew, a spiral within a flower, a wandering vine, a weave or wrap. | |
| November | NATURALLY FRAMED | Framed by a window, a cave, trees, rocks, etc. Any picture that is framed within the photograph so that the main subject is highlighted or emphasized. | |
| December | Print of the Year | Previous print entries from this year can be entered for a Print of the Year award. |
